[Stage Preview]: “This team time trial is short and totally flat. We don’t want to end up with big time gaps but at the same time we do want some of the favourites to lose time. But on a course like this the gaps won’t, in theory, be too big. Each team’s time will be taken when their fifth rider crosses the line. This test is all about getting the balance right. Every team has riders who feel more at home in this kind of test and they will have to rein themselves in slightly because the objective is to finish as a group. Some of the Anglo-Saxon teams make a point of focusing on the team time trial as these tests underline the homogeneity and intrinsic value of the group as a whole.”
Picking the winner of this year’s Tour de France is a snap for some. Oddsmakers hailed three-time winner Alberto Contador of Saxo Bank a 4-5 favorite as of Friday.
For good reason: Contador has won the last six Grand Tours he has entered. He is one of only five riders in the last century to win all three, the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana, in a career.
Others believe that nobody will win this year. The cloud hanging over Contador and his inclusion this year guarantees turmoil, distractions and controversy throughout the three-week, 2,100-mile race,which starts in northwestern France today.
Davis Phinney is perhaps America’s winningest road racer ever, with dozens or hundreds of sprint wins at U.S. races. He was the first American to win a stage of the Tour de France, in 1986, and won a second the following year. That year he also won the final edition of the Coors Classic stage race in his native Colorado.
Phinney lives in Boulder, Colorado, with his wife Connie Carpenter, the gold medalist in the 1984 Olympic road race. Their son Taylor is a member of the BMC team.
Phinney is the founder of the Davis Phinney Foundation, which aims to inspire and inform people living with Parkinson’s disease.
